The new Jack Ryan novel leads off with a look back at The Hunt For Red October, the first book in the series, and the plot is connected to that first novel. Today, Russia is in a state of turmoil. The current President doesn’t know that a group of old hardliners are planning to oust him from power and using a newly made advance sub, carrying nuclear warheads to attack America. Jack Ryan’s daughter Katie is the focal point of this novel, she’s a Navy lieutenant now and is researching the events of Red October and the Russian sub now on its way here, and it may be up to her to stop the attacks before they happen. John Clark and the campus are also in the novel, having gone to Russia on a dangerous mission to find out who the men are that want to overthrow the current regime, and then it will be up to President Ryan to decide what to do about everything that’s happening. This is the first novel written by Andrews & Wilson for the Clancy estate, and they have done a great job, especially tying it into Red October. It’s all action, and having Katie as a central figure for this one is a refreshing change. These upcoming novels are in good hands with these two.
