Perci has always had an overbearing mother, who always made fun of what she wears, and her eating (she’s overweight), and tries to control her life and that of her younger sister. On this day while at the dentist’s office, her boyfriend Brent (and boss at her father’s mortgage company), dumps her on the radio and says some bad things about her. Along with her best friend, Mathias, she makes a do-over list to start the new year. She quits her job and starts working at a daycare, which outrages her mother. She starts hanging out with her hot neighbor Nate, and his daughter, who goes to the daycare she works at. At first, they’re just friends and start dating, but something happens with his kid, and he breaks up with Perci, who also at a family party for her parents gets drunk, and tells her mother off, as well as other family secrets she reveals. Finally getting everything off her chest is a relief, and things start to change for the better for her, and her mother butts in once again, but for good this time, and it just might fix things with Nate. This is a well-written novel, part rom-com, all heart. At its core, it’s about family, and you root for Perci the whole time you’re reading it. Special mention to the supporting character of Mimi, her grandmother, who is a hoot.
