The year is 2002, and Teddy Hartigan, who is 92 and living in an assisted-living facility, agrees to meet with journalist Karyn Scahnoff, to write his story, and in return will try to help her find her sister she lost during WWII. Teddy starts his story in 1938, while working for the State Department in Washington, he is transferred to the US consulate in Amsterdam to process visa and travel applications, something he does not want to do, but has no choice. It’s chaos in Europe with the rise of Hitler, but Amsterdam should be safe. As the days and years go one, Teddy must find a way to save his love, Sara, who is Jewish, and an ophaned girl named Katy. A lot of people’s lives are in his hand trying to process visas and get people to safety. We follow his story along as readers much like Karyn does and it’s an intense story of one man who tries to make a difference during the was. Author Balsom has written another great novel of love, loss and war and a bleak time in the world’s history. This is one you will want to keep reading.
