Unorthodox (Netflix, Streaming)
Selling a story about escaping the orthodox Jewish religion must have been a tough sell in Hollywood. It’s pretty well known that a plurality of Hollywood producers are Jewish. However, that’s one of the magic things about Netflix. It doesn’t walk a lot of the same lines that other networks or studios have in the past. Taking on Christianity or Judaism is not something they sweat about. It’s just another show in a sea of content.
In this show, a young woman named Esther is forced into an orthodox relationship and pressured into having a baby. The show juxtaposes Esther’s liberation with the events that lead her to leave. And it all gets more powerful as it goes along. Shira Haas gives a commanding and memorable performance in a show that you won’t be able to stop watching.
