12 Best of Christmas: The Best Movies of 2024!

by | Dec 23, 2024 | TV | 0 comments

As a cinephile, I always look forward to the most anticipated films of the year. However, Hollywood’s strategic Oscar season scheduling left me yearning for titles like The Brutalist, Nickel Boys, and September 5. These films were frustratingly confined to limited New York and Los Angeles runs in late 2024, officially qualifying for awards but inaccessible to wider audiences until January. While they may dominate the 2024 award circuit, they won’t appear on this list. Instead, I’ve compiled my personal favorite films that I had the privilege of watching throughout the year. Despite the absences, 2024 offered an incredible lineup that kept my love for cinema alive and thriving.

12. Hit Man

This film is quite a showcase for Richard Linklater’s clever screenwriting ability and storytelling prowess. We have all known for a long time that Linklater can tackle comedy and drama, but this one is one of most clever films ever. Glenn Powell’s performance as Gary Johnson, a professor masquerading as a hitman, reveals he has versatility and charisma. The film blends action and comedy seamlessly, delivering sharp dialogue and unexpected twists. You combine the engaging narrative with standout performances by Powell and Adria Arjona, and you get one of the most entertaining comedies of 2024. You can watch it now on Netflix.

11. Longlegs

Longlegs, directed by Osgood Perkins, masterfully intertwines horror and procedural drama. The film follows FBI Agent Lee Harker, portrayed by Maika Monroe, as she delves into a series of occult-related murders. Nicolas Cage delivers a chilling performance as the enigmatic serial killer, Longlegs. The film’s atmospheric tension and intricate narrative captivate audiences, making it a standout in the horror genre. For those seeking a gripping and unsettling cinematic experience, “Longlegs” will deliver the goods. It is now playing on demand on Amazon, Apple, and much more.

10. Juror #2

At Clint Eastwood’s age, pretty much any movie he makes could be his last. And if Juror #2 ends up being that movie then it is a hell of a good movie to go out on. This is because it is a compelling legal thriller that delves into moral dilemmas and justice. Nicholas Hoult delivers a standout performance as Justin Kemp, a juror grappling with a profound moral conflict. Is he actually the one who is guilty of the crime he is judging someone else for? Toni Collette and J.K. Simmons provide strong support, enhancing the film’s depth. Eastwood’s direction ensures a gripping narrative, keeping audiences engaged throughout. The film’s exploration of ethical complexities makes it one of the better courtroom dramas of recent years. You can watch it now on Max.

9. Twisters

When it was announced that Lee Isaac Chung (Minari) was going to be directing a Twisters sequel I was very interested. Then they announced that Glenn Powell and Daisy Edgar-Jones would be headlining this film and I was sold. Twisters delivers a thrilling sequel to the 1996 classic Twister. The film follows Kate Carter, portrayed by Daisy Edgar-Jones, a retired storm chaser haunted by a past tornado encounter. When her friend Javi convinces her to return to Tornado Alley, they join forces with Tyler Owens, a charismatic YouTuber played by Glen Powell. Together, they confront unprecedented tornadoes, blending scientific pursuit with adrenaline-fueled storm chasing. The film’s spectacular visual effects, wonderful cinematography, dynamic storytelling, and one of the best soundtracks of the year, make it a standout disaster movie. Check it out on Peacock today!

8. His Three Daughters

His Three Daughters, directed by Azazel Jacobs, is a poignant drama exploring sisterhood and familial bonds. The film stars Carrie Coon, Natasha Lyonne, and Elizabeth Olsen as three sisters reuniting in their father’s New York City apartment to care for him during his final days. As they navigate their father’s impending passing, the sisters confront past grievances and rediscover their connections. The film’s intimate setting and compelling performances create a deeply emotional narrative. The final scene in this film might also be the best scenes in any movie all year. You can watch this right now on Netflix.

7. A Real Pain

Jesse Eisenberg proves with this film that he has the stuff to be one of our great directors. A Real Pain is a poignant exploration of family and heritage. The film follows two Jewish-American cousins, David (Eisenberg) and Benji (Kieran Culkin), who travel to Poland to honor their late grandmother’s memory. As they navigate their differing personalities—David’s introversion contrasting with Benji’s free-spirited nature—they confront personal and historical traumas. Eisenberg’s film balances humor and solemnity, creating a narrative that is both engaging and thought-provoking. Culkin’s performance is particularly noteworthy, bringing depth, nuance, and laughs to the film. This is currently available to watch on Hulu.

6. A Complete Unknown

Timothee Chalamet is quickly showing the world that he is one of the finest actors working today and his performance here is unforgettable. James Mangold’s film offers an intimate portrayal of Bob Dylan’s transformative years. Timothée Chalamet completely embodies Dylan, capturing his evolution from folk artist to rock icon. The film delves into Dylan’s relationships with figures like Joan Baez, Johnny Cash, and Pete Seeger, highlighting his personal and artistic growth.

Chalamet, Edward Norton, Boyd Holbrook, and Monica Barbaro all sing their own versions of these classic songs and this is often the best part of the film. In fact, one sequence where Dylan plays the blues with Seeger and Brownie McGhee is one of the best scenes of 2024. And it is how lived in this scenes feel that make A Complete Unknown one of the best biopics I have seen in a long time. This film opens in theaters on Christmas Day.

5. Conclave

Conclave, directed by Edward Berger, is a gripping mystery thriller set within the Vatican’s secretive papal election. Following the sudden death of the pope, Cardinal Thomas Lawrence, portrayed by Ralph Fiennes, leads the conclave to select a new pontiff. As the process unfolds, he uncovers hidden scandals among the candidates, intensifying the suspense. The film’s stellar cast, including Stanley Tucci and John Lithgow, delivers compelling performances that enhance the intricate narrative. The twists and turns of this taut screenplay, craft a captivating exploration of power and secrecy. You can watch it on Peacock right now.

4. Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga

This is one of the most criminally underseen films of 2024! I know it is a Mad Max film without Mad Max, but people have got to get over that. This is easily one of the most finely crafted films of this or any year. And I truly hope that nominations for its cinematography, editing, and visual effects do not get overlooked at this years Oscars. George Miller’s pulse pounding film delves into the origins of the formidable warrior Furiosa. Anya Taylor-Joy delivers a compelling performance as young Furiosa, abducted from the Green Place by the warlord Dementus, portrayed by Chris Hemsworth. Hemsworth gives what might be his best performance ever in this film.

The film chronicles Furiosa’s harrowing journey through the wasteland, highlighting her resilience and determination. George Miller is truly a master of high-octane action sequences and richly detailed post-apocalyptic worlds. And this film stands as his definitive picture of the Mad Max wastelands. You really should not miss it. Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is streaming on Max.

3. Civil War

Many complained about the fact that this film did not take a political side or try to show how an upcoming civil war might happen. Well, they can take those complaints someplace else. This movie is not really about that at all. It is a warning to our country that if we do not get our act together we might end up in a warzone right here at home. It is trying to use film to show us the same thing that war photographers have been trying to show us for generations.

Alex Garland’s film immerses viewers in a dystopian America torn by internal conflict. The film’s expert sound design, cinematography, and editing create some of the most intense war sequences ever put to screen. Kirsten Dunst, Cailee Spaeny, and Stephen McKinley Henderson anchor this film with their performances. Yet, it is Jesse Plemons that delivers the most haunting performance in the truly disturbing scene where he asks, “What kind of American are you?” This moment stands out as one of the most frighteningly unforgettable sequences in modern movie history. The entire film will leave stunned. Don’t miss it on Max right now!

2. Dune Part II

If you asked me tomorrow what the greatest science fiction films of all time were, Dune Part II would easily be in the Top 5. Seeing this film on a giant IMAX screen was one of the great pleasures of my year. In fact, it was so tremendous that I have been a snob about watching it at home. I keep telling my wife that it just isn’t the same. Then I end up sitting through it over and over again. This film is just such an epic masterpiece that it is hard to stop watching once you start! Denis Villeneuve masterfully combines expert sound design, cinematography, editing, and visual effects to create an immersive experience. Hans Zimmer returns to expand on his Oscar winning score and the cast from the first are all back.

The addition of Austin Butler, Florence Pugh, and Christopher Walken round out one of the most incredible casts ever assembled. Beyond its technical achievements, the narrative delves into profound themes, prompting viewers to contemplate deep questions about religion, power, and oppression. And it has one of the greatest fight sequences in modern movie history. If you have not seen this film yet you should go out and watch it right now! Dune Part II is streaming on Max right now.

1. Wicked

Jon M. Chu’s Wicked effortlessly enchants audiences with its masterful blend of expert choreography, stunning cinematography, and meticulous set design. Every frame feels like a labor of love, transporting viewers to the magical land of Oz in unparalleled detail. Additionally, the film’s sound work and editing elevate the experience, ensuring each scene flows seamlessly while every note resonates perfectly. The visual effects are nothing short of spectacular, creating breathtaking sequences that complement the grandeur of this beloved musical adaptation.

The film’s musical performances set a new benchmark for cinematic musicals, featuring several of the most memorable numbers ever. Ariana Grande’s plucky and hilarious rendition of “Popular” captures her comedic brilliance and impeccable vocal talent, leaving audiences laughing and humming along. However, Cynthia Erivo’s jaw-dropping performance of the iconic “Defying Gravity” delivers a cinematic moment for the ages. Her heartfelt delivery and powerful vocals cement it as one of the year’s most unforgettable scenes, rivaling any other in cinematic history.

Beyond its technical and musical excellence, Wicked triumphs by bringing its characters and their relationships to vivid life. The dynamic between Elphaba and Glinda is not only emotionally compelling but also highlights themes of friendship, identity, and power. Through these layered performances and groundbreaking artistry, Wicked becomes a film that transcends the screen. Whether you’re a die-hard fan of the Broadway production or new to its magic, this cinematic adaptation is destined to leave an indelible mark on your heart.

Wicked is in theaters right now and the perfect excuse to go to the movies this Christmas!
