Best in Arts & Entertainment 2020: – Small Axe: Mangrove (Movie, TV)

Small Axe: Mangrove (Movie, Streaming, Amazon Prime)

The prolific director Steve McQueen directed 5 films (‘Mangrove’, ‘Education’, ‘Lovers Rock’, ‘Alex Wheatle’, ‘Red, White, and Blue’)  this year about the black experience in London. They are all great and I strongly suggest you watch them. However, ‘Mangrove’ is the one that has stuck with me the most. The injustice of what was done to the people of the Mangrove was a stain on British society and their struggle still echoes through to today.

Letitia Wright (‘Black Panther’) gives an Oscar worthy performance as the leader of the British Black Panther movement, Altheia Jones-LeCointe. Sadly, because this is considered an episode of a streaming series, she can’t be nominated for the Academy Award. However, if she is not recognized by the Emmy’s next year then it is a travesty. The same can be said for Steve McQueen. He is clearly the best director of 2020!
