Grey Daze: Amends (Music, Streaming)
When Chester Bennington took his life in the summer of 2017, I was just a few weeks from getting to see Linkin Park for the first time. I had been a fan for nearly 20 years, but it never seemed to work out. Sadly, it never will. Yet, the other sadness that myself and other fans carried was the idea of never hearing his unforgettable voice in a new track of music ever again. Well, this turned out to not be entirely true.
Before his death, Chester was planning to get back together with the band he started with as a teenager and do a reunion tour of sorts. This band was called Grey Daze and they had come to be mostly forgotten by musical history. You can find their cheaply recorded old albums online or listen to them on YouTube, but most Linkin Park fans didn’t even know they existed. Until now.
Their latest album is a compilation of old songs that were rerecorded and amazing recordings of Chester’s voice that are perfectly dubbed over these newly recorded tracks. There is also a song called ‘B12’ that was recorded with members from the band Korn. Who were friends of Chester’s while he was alive. Put together, these songs represent a perfectly realized album and are a testament to why Chester ended up being the prolific talent that he was.
However, the coolest thing about this album is the way it feels like a time capsule. It takes you back 25 years to the grunge scene of the 90’s and delivers it to you with a polish that could not have existed for this band in that time. These are fantastic songs, and I wish it didn’t take the loss of one of rocks greatest talents to bring them to us. But, while we may not be able to bring him back, this album brings his voice back for another round of unforgettable songs.
