Lovecraft Country (HBO Max, Television)

H.P. Lovecraft is one of the most well known science fiction writers of the 20th century. He was also notoriously racist and his novels were littered with racist notions. Yet, history has shown us that many blacks were avid fans of Lovecraft and used his novels to escape from their difficult lives. ‘Lovecraft Country’ tackles this conundrum both thematically and literally. This juxtaposition of the difficulties of the racist south is a surprisingly illuminating mix. Especially when combined with an embrace of Lovecraft style science fiction.

However, the most impressive part of he series is the way that each episode works as it’s own genre story that all connects into a deeper narrative. So, if you love ‘Invasion of the Body Snatchers’ then there is an episode for you. You into haunted house stories? Well, there is one of those as well. The whole thing is a consistently clever, eye-opening, and sometimes powerful look at race relations. Don’t miss it!
