Austin Hardy, 20, has made it into the U.S. Open as the first openly gay player. He has been working his way up over the years, along with his coach, former player Robbie, who took over after his father died, something Austin has never gotten over. On his first day of practice, he sees Diego Cruz, the world number two player, and is really hot. Austin and Diego strike up a friendship, and are hanging out almost every night. Austin senses something is up with Diego, and he soon tells him he may be gay, but he’s not, meaning he is unsure. They soon kiss and do a little more. Everything seems to be going well until they have to face each other on the court, both are struggling with their feelings, and it takes a toll on one of them, and it could mean the end of whatever is going on between them. This is an intense, well-written story that does a good look at mental health, the tennis world, and coming to terms with who you are and who you want to be. A perfect summer gay rom-com.
