Seven Snipers is a passable action thriller that does not expand too far beyond the title. The film is about snipers, frequently uses sniper-scope visuals, and has a paper-thin storyline that gives those snipers a reason to show off their skills. I liked all the actors, notably Radha Mitchell (Silent Hill), Tim Roth, and Ioan Gruffudd (Fantastic Four 2005), though I thought all their characters were woefully underdeveloped leaving me with little-to-no concern about what happened to them. The scenery was nice and the typical suspenseful music helped build some tension. I liked it for what it was, and I am sure some other audiences will love it a lot more than I.
Radha Mitchell plays Kris, a retired sniper living with her daughter in a secluded part of Australia. Within the first ten minutes, I was questioning her sanity and whether she was supposed to be the protagonist of the film after she shot at an alleged real estate agent that was driving away from her home. Luckily for the film, the man turned out to be a follower of the film’s main (and only subsequent) villain, “The Dragon” (played by Tim Roth), an alleged warlord (on his own) who is seeking revenge (alone) against Kris for something in their past. Fearing for the safety of her daughter, Kris calls for help from other snipers.
From there, the movie is basically a group of snipers protecting Kris and her daughter from one other sniper with a touch of family drama on the side. There are some surprising moments that try to keep the audience on the edge of their seats, and then there are other moments where the characters are metaphorically looking for danger. Seven Snipers probably will not stay in my memory for long and I doubt I will watch it again, but it was somewhat of an entertaining movie and if you like movies about snipers, you will probably like this movie.
