Movie Review: ‘Mutiny’

Mutiny is pretty much what I have come to expect from a film starring Jason Statham: a brisk action movie with a lot of violence. The story is entertaining and engaging enough, albeit highly predictable and routine for the genre; I cannot speak for the rest of the audience, but I at no point found myself “on the edge of my seat” and was more likely wondering how many “bad guys” were left for Statham (or his de facto partner) to take out.

Statham stars as Cole Reed, a bodyguard for a billionaire cargo company CEO on the verge of selling his business. The pair get ambushed leading to the death of the CEO, but of course Cole survives after taking out all the attackers. Cole is then framed for the murder and follows the assassins’ trail to a cargo ship where he discovers a human trafficking operation. Once on the ship, Cole manages to team up with Angie (Annabelle Wallis), the only crew member that is not a part of the human trafficking operation, to fend off the rest of the crew and message for help from a Navy Vessel.

Once on the cargo ship, the movie is practically another “Die Hard on a boat” homage making heavy use of the ship’s industrial setting in the action scenes. There is little character development, the plot is paper thin, and, unless this is your first movie, there is little-to-no suspense. On the bright side, there is visual appeal if you enjoy well-choreographed fight scenes featuring Jason Statham.
