Review by Lisa Payne
When a movie starts with a creepy version of a nursery rhyme, you know you’re in for some otherworldly mischief.
“What was that?”
“Probably some animal.”
“That’s what everyone says before they are attacked by some psycho.”
THANK YOU! That is exactly what I said, more or less.
Melancholy music, new girl Zoey (Tiffany Alvord) arrives in town. “What horror movie did you move us into?” Zoey asks her dad (Mark Bloom) as they drive up to the impossibly large house at the top of the stairs. Girl you know it. Because you, like me, have seen it all before.
At school the next morning, Zoey runs into the mean girl, Jessie (Audrey Whitby) with her posse. Zoey is saved by Tera (Piper Curda) and soon meets Morgan (Teala Dunn). Our perky heroines wind up ghost hunting together, as you do.
There is the class hunk, and the sick, nerdy boy next door, and all the disappearances. Standard stuff.
That being said, I really enjoyed it, and was happy that it wasn’t THAT kind of horror movie. School Spirits was kinda cute and goofy.
One of the characters reminded me of Rose The Hat in Doctor Sleep. That’s about as threatening as it really got.
Available Tuesday, June 2nd.
