Review by Lisa Payne
As I started watching, I felt like I had come in halfway through, and now I know why. I Will Make You Mine is the third movie in a trilogy started by Dave Boyle.
Surrogate Valentine, then Daylight Savings were the first two movies.
Lynn Chen takes the writing and directing reins on I Will Make You Mine. Goh (Goh Nakwmura) is a struggling singer songwriter. The women in his life are musician Yea-Ming (Yea-Ming Chen), Rachel (Lynn Chen) who is married to a cheater, and Professor Erika (Ayako Fujitani) who has a daughter Sachiko (Ayami Riley Tomine). Each of the women has had a romantic relationship with Goh in the past.
Goh comes back to town and lack of closure from the past kicks up feelings within each of the women. They each vie for Goh’s affections. I was invested in each of the stories of the women more than Goh’s, as unreliable, ambling, non-decisive men don’t really interest me. What I found was they tried to invest too much of themselves in Goh. More exploration could have been given to each story, rather than just wrapping them up in a bow at the end.
This is a beautifully quiet (in tone and execution) black and white film which I found ultimately unsatisfying because of the two-dimensional writing. I still think it’s worth a view.
