Movie Review: ‘Diana Kennedy: Nothing Fancy’

First off, I need Diana Kennedy to be my grandma. She is now 97 years old and irrepressible. I want to be like her when I grow up.

Diana is a pioneer who has traveled extensively, written nine cookbooks on Mexican food, and still lives her unconventional life there. She is a fan of proper food made with the correct ingredients. There will be absolutely no garlic in guacamole. She is fearless, foul-mouthed (a lady after my own heart), lets nothing stand in her way, and is just the most wonderful person ever.

This documentary features glorious interviews with chefs José Andrés, Rick Bayless, Gabriela Camara, and Alice Water.

Diana runs rings around everyone. There is no opinion she holds that she does not express. I adore this brilliant woman.

This is a very assured debut by Director Elizabeth Carroll. Diana Kennedy’s essence shines through like a megaton spotlight.

DIANA KENNEDY: NOTHING FANCY will open nationwide on Friday, May 22nd as part of Greenwich Entertainment’s virtual cinema partnership with theaters throughout the country.
