Laura Madeleine’s second book is a heart-warming journey into the past and asks one question…Where is Emeline Vain?
It’s 1969 and young solicitor Bill Perch is given his first opportunity on a case. He’s been an assistant for the firm but now that a rich family looking to grab their father’s power of attorney (he’s had a stroke) to sell their rundown home Problem is that Emeline Vain owns part of the house and she hasn’t been seen since 1919. Bill has no idea how to even begin to try and find her. It’s assumed she has died but there’s no proof and judges have refused to declare her dead.
So Bill takes off for Saltedge and the family home Hallerton. When he gets there he finds a rundown house barely standing. He starts searching for anything that can help his case. He soon finds Emeline’s diary from 1919 and learns a lot about the young girl. He also starts to feel that the house is talking to him and feeling him. He becomes enthralled with Emeline and feels that she is still alive. After reading the diary he feels he has the proof that can get the power of attorney for the father.
Back in London meeting with the Vainsd Bill suddenly takes off and decides the case isn’t over. He tracks down Tim Vane (the father) and he manages to get Bill to go look for Emeline. He takes off for Paris to start his adventure of a lifetime to track her down.
We learn Emeline’s story via flashbacks from the journal and from her directly and where and what happened to her. To avoid spoilers will stop there.
Each chapter rotates between Bill and Emeline stories. As the story moves along each person learns a lot about themselves and they grow as people. The story is must read and the reader finds it hard to put the book down. I know I was just excited to keep reading until the end. It kept my attention throughout the whole story. It will have you rooting for Bill to figure out what happened all those years ago and if Emeline is indeed still alive after all these years.
