Sheriff Emmy Clifton has just left her mother’s funeral when she hears gunshots at the home of her friend Allison Vickery. When she enters the house, she finds Allison dead, and her daughter, Mandy, who is 16, and barely breathing. The killer gets away, and Emmy is on the case, along with her police force, and her sister, Jude, who is a former FBI agent, and someone she hasn’t seen in 40 years. Nothing about this case is normal; there are a number of suspects, including Allison’s abusive husband, Bill, her love, the police chief in another town, Reggie, where she used to work. At the scene of the crime, Emmy finds $300,000 in cash and fake IDs; it seems Allison was going to take off. The case takes many twists and turns, including finding out about dirty cops, maybe even her father, a murder trial years ago, and the local drugking family. This is the second novel in the series, and it’s another great one. The story is a page-turner, almost every chapter has some sort of twist, and the relationship between Emmy and Jude is tense, especially with a big secret between them. This is another intense novel that only author Karin Slaughter could write.
