Harriet Smith (from Jane Austen’s Emma) is in this story a con artist who would do cons with her father until she ditched him over a year ago and is now on her own. She is hired by the wealthy Mrs. Churchill, who wants her to break up the engagement of her nephew to Jane Fairfax, find her stolen jewelry, and find the person who is trying to kill her. Harriet heads out of London to Highbury, where she reunites with her gay best friend Robert, who at times steals the book. What she finds is a number of potential suspects, murders, and the possibility that her father is on her trail waiting to take her out. This is a fun novel, with some quirky characters, all led by Harriet Smith. I am not familiar with the character in Emma, but here she is a street-smart, strong female character. The story is fun, with twists and turns, and worthy of more novels with these characters.
