A man having dinner at an Italian restaurant dies, and so do other people around him. It was a hit by the Russians, with a nerve gas, on a man reported to be Emerald, who was working as a spy. It soon turns out they got the wrong man; he was innocent. It turns out the high-powered CEO of an American Drone Company may be the man called Emerald, and the FBI is all over it. When they get enough evidence, he is arrested, and a court case is set. Leading the way is Deputy U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, Nora Carleton, along with her team, which includes Special Agent Benny Dugan, who is also her stepfather. The case takes them from New York to Las Vegas, and the evidence is all circumstantial, but she feels they have a good case. We follow along with the trial in real time, run by a really cool blind judge and a shady defense team, and Nora hopes they have enough to convict him. This is the fourth book in this series, and my first time reading one, and it is great. It’s written by former FBI Director James Comey and has a great lead character in Nora and a fun supporting cast. The trial scenes are intense and are as good as any John Grisham novel. Fans of legal thrillers will love this one.
