Review by Monique Thompson
A mother and daughter head off for a secluded weekend to reconnect but little do they know the sordid past of the home they’re staying in let alone the strangeness it attracts as they descend into madness.
So the synopsis may have you a bit intrigued right? Certainly, sounds like a great setup for an exciting thriller. Unfortunately, EVIL UNDER THE SKIN was everything but exciting. I really hate when independent films, especially horror/thrillers, fail tremendously. Most may be under the impression that there has to be this ridiculous budget with some crazy effects in order for a horror to be solid but that isn’t always the case. With EVIL UNDER THE SKIN, this could have been great but everything seems to have gone wrong for me.
For starters the music score chosen was atrocious! Each scene was separated by this classical piece accompanied with scenes of a lake view. Combined with the acting and camera placement during each scene, you’d think you were watching a stage play instead of a movie. At times, it even felt like one of those terrible porn films with very bad acting. Things just really didn’t make any sense here.
After about 35 minutes in, I was still questioning, ok now what is this really about. Things just didn’t ever really make sense. The mom continued to have visions of something sinister but even those visuals were bad. It’s safe to say I was thoroughly not impressed with anything about this one here. If you just have absolutely nothing else to watch, you can give this a shot but otherwise, I’d say avoid it like the plague.
