TV Animated Series Review: ‘Maya And The Three’ On Netflix

Netflix screened the first two episodes of their upcoming animated series for kids, and it looks absolutely stunning. Jorge R Gutierrez is the series’ creator, director, writer, and producer … it’s his baby, though much credit also goes to the animators and deep cast of voice actors. It’s important to note that this is not a series for small kids. The action includes fierce fighting and some of the characters are outlandish and may a bit frightening for the youngest ones. Depending on current viewing habits, I’d put the minimum acceptable age somewhere between 5 and 7.

The gorgeous animation corresponds to the Hispanic mythology in a story that involves an ancient prophecy … again, probably too complex for the youngest kids. The episodes are only 30 minutes long, and it takes the first two before Maya really gets started on her quest. Some of the cultural aspects were unfamiliar to me, but will likely prove fascinating to those who can recognize the special moments.

Zoey Saldana (GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, 2014) voices Maya, and the roster of familiar actors is impressive and includes: Hailey Hermida, Carolina Ravassa, Diego Luna, Gael Garcia Bernal, Diego Luna, Cheech Marin, Rita Moreno, Rosie Perez, Wyclef Jean, and Danny Trejo. This is a limited series (9 episodes) with no “next” season. The visuals are outstanding, just check it out yourself before allowing those toddlers to join in.

Opens on Netflix beginning October 22, 2021
