Gambling has come along way since the early days in Rome. There has been a total transformation with the onslaught of technology and the internet. Today, we are even witnessing the US finally embracing the online aspect of this form of entertainment and will only see brands such as Royal Vegas casino become even more popular.
So it stands to reason that there have been some epic gambling movies over the years, and most of us will have seen the most popular from the genre at least once or twice. However, there are more gambling movies out there than meets the eye, with some of them vastly underrated. So, we’ve picked out some of those worth a watch below.
The Good Thief
Nick Nolte takes on the role of Bob in The Good Thief. Bob is a thief entering his twilight years with addictions to heroin and gambling. While everything tells you he shouldn’t, Bob thinks he can pull off one last job, and therefore plots a heist at a Monte Carlo casino. He needs a team to help him, as well as being able to get the upper hand on the local chief of police, who knows Bob’s up to no good again.
Bookies is a movie which tells the classic story of a group of people who are fed up of losing money when gambling. Students Toby, Jude and Casey, are tired of losing when placing bets with local mobsters Larry and Vincent, so they set about starting up a bookmaking firm of their own. However, due to their success, this sees them threaten the turf held by the mobsters, who then decide to try and stop their rivals in their tracks.
High Roller – The Stu Ungar Story
High Roller – The Stu Ungar Story is based on real-life events, with Stuey Ungar going from being a hot card prospect to one of the world’s most recognised gambling legends. Stuey starts life in gambling in the wrong way, by allowing his obsessive ways to lead him into debt with the wrong people. However, along comes Vincent, a man with the right connections, who offers Stuey a chance to redeem himself in a rummy competition in Vegas. From there, Stuey establishes a career in poker, but addictions and excess come a-calling once again.
Looks can be deceiving at times, and this is the case when it comes to Dan Mahowny, a man seen as honest and respectable by his family and peers. However, Mahowny is a compulsive liar, who is stealing from the Toronto bank he works at to fund his gambling addiction and to pay off debts to his bookie. Mahowny is a money ticket for casino boss Victor, who is keen for more debt to pile up, but in the end Mahowny struggles to hide his misdemeanors and his life skids off the tracks, leaving his world in turmoil.
While these gambling movies may not be as recognizable as some out there, they all feature the edge of the seat action and gripping story-lines to make them must watches. Whether you’re a fan of gambling or not, everyone will find all of the films mentioned above enjoyable, as they’re all well written and star some fantastic actors.
