The Growing Popularity of Cryptocurrencies in Film
The astonishing rise of cryptocurrencies has changed the world in recent years. The likes of Bitcoin and Ether have revolutionized how we think about money and investments.
As with any major change, this is starting to be reflected in the world of movies and documentaries. If you want to find out more about cryptocurrencies, then you could sit back and enjoy the following films.
Bitcoin (2018)
This simply-titled comedy is in pre-production at the time of writing. It will be the feature film debut from Christian Cashmir and is set to feature comedian Theo Von. Filming has apparently been brought forward due to the ever-growing importance of Bitcoin.
The plots centers around a couple of brothers from Arizona who find a Bitcoin wallet worth $20 million. Naturally, they try and sell it on the black market. Filming is set to start in New Mexico, with the film-makers keen to get it out quickly to take advantage of current interest in cryptocurrencies.
Of course, while Bitcoin is the most talked about digital currency there are many others that have interesting histories and numerous uses. For instance, we can see that there are several online casinos that accept Dogecoin, which is a meme-crypto coin with a market cap in the 100s of millions. It was create as a tribute to “doge”, a Shiba Inu dog that went viral.
Bitcoin: The End of Money As We Know It (2015)
This documentary by Torsten Hoffmann gives us a 60-minute look at what Bitcoin is all about. It is worth remembering that it is from back in 2014, so it is a fascinating look at the currency’s early days rather than an up-to-date summary.
The premise behind the documentary is that this virtual currency could disrupt the world’s financial system as we know it. Hoffmann speaks to a number of people from the cryptocurrency industry and the whole thing is directed by Alex Winter, best known for starring in Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure.
It should be noted that since this documentary was made Bitcoin has forked into new versions called Bitcoin Gold and Bitcoin Cash. In addition, the value of the main token has skyrocketed in this time, leading to some suggestions that it could reach $125,000 by the end of 2022.
Banking on Bitcoin (2016)
Another interesting documentary about this currency, Banking on Bitcoin was made in 2016 and introduces many of the early adopters who started using it before it went mainstream. This shows why Bitcoin has proved so attractive to different types of people and raises some intriguing questions about the future of cryptocurrencies.
One of the key points this documentary covers is how to regulate digital currencies without overly limiting their innovation. It isn’t the most action-packed viewing but it does give us some insights into what the future may hold.
Another way of getting involved in cryptocurrencies that has grown massively is through ICOs. These are the initial offerings of new tokens that allow bold investors to get in right at the start of a coin’s history and we can expect to see the first documentaries about them soon.
The future of cryptocurrencies is sure to involve a lot of exciting twists and turns. As they become more widely accepted by more people we can expect to see them feature in far more movies and documentaries like these.
