Greetings again from the darkness. It’s a safe bet that not many other movies have been inspired by a Nicki Minaj shower curtain. I say “other movies” because that’s exactly what kicked off the idea for this project. And that same shower curtain makes a memorable appearance in this short film from writer-director Jessica Sanders (MARCH OF THE LIVING, 2010) and co-writers Esther Povitsky and Avi Rothman.
Ms. Povitsky (“Dollface”) stars as Esther, a young woman eager for love and a legitimate connection in world where she dreams of seeing Nicki Minaj in concert, and begs her brother Avi (co-writer Rothman) for rides and free lunches. In place of love, Esther has an older f-buddy named Simon (Simon Rex, RED ROCKET, 2021), who is the kind of guy that when she wakes him up, he barks, “I can’t sleep in a twin bed.”
Avi is a struggling actor auditioning for cereal commercials and dating an adoring Vivian (Vivian Bang, WHITE RABBIT, 2018), who tries to guide him and her family through the cultural differences. Bad breath, male modeling, and cruel dance class acquaintances also play a role here in Ms. Sanders mostly improvised short film (9:12), where we appreciate what we see, though would have welcomed a few more minutes of Esther’s story.
