Movie Short Review: ‘Before You’

Greetings again from the darkness. Filmmaker Lauren Melinda deftly handles a topic that has recently turned so explosive that rational conversations seem to be a thing of the past. In less than 15 minutes and based on a true story (probably many), the film follows a woman as she looks back on a pregnancy that was not medically viable.

Tala Ashe and Adam Rodriguez star as a wife and husband taking a drive. They are clearly stressed, though not with each other. A chain of quick edits takes us through the steps and stages of this couple – from the elation of pregnancy, the shared joy with family, ultrasound, DNA testing, and the heartbreaking news from the doctor. The full spectrum of emotions is on display as the couple works through the process.

Filmmaker Melinda uses an empty child seat in the backseat to drive home the ever-present gut-wrenching feeling. She also uses a gray/bland color palette to emphasize what the world looks like to those in this situation. Produced ‘in solidarity’ with Planned Parenthood, it’s a shame that conversations on this topic have veered towards politics rather than decent human caring. The film is making its way through the festival circuit in hopes of inspiring productive conversation.
