Movie Review: ‘The Broken Hearts Gallery’

Review by Lisa Payne

After 26-yo gallery assistant Lucy’s (Geraldine Viswanathan) worst day, where she realises that her boyfriend and work colleague (don’t shit where you live), Max (Utkarsh Ambudkar) is seeing someone else. At the same time, makes a fool of herself and gets fired by gallery owner, Eva Woolf (the effervescent Bernadette Peters). She gets into the wrong car from her ride-hail app. I mean honestly it is so easily done when you’re crying and want nothing more than to get home.

To be fair, Nick (Dacre Montgomery, who is Billy from Stranger Things) tries to disabuse Lucy of her belief that he is her driver. She isn’t listening. Nick drives Lucy home anyway, listens to and comments on her story.

Lucy’s roommates, Amanda (Molly Gordon) and Nadine (Phillipa Soo) are always completely supportive and at the same time betting on Lucy’s relationships. Amanda’s boyfriend, the silent Jeff (Nathan Dales) is continued comic relief.

Lucy is a hoarder of items from past relationships. Not even closet. It is on full display in her bedroom. Cue Chrissy Teigen gif.

Lucy and Nick meet again as Nick pulls Lucy away of a potentially embarrassing situation. Lucy sees Nick’s hotel renovation project. Lucy leaves one of the items from Max and thus begins the Broken Hearts Gallery space. Lucy and Nick have a natural chemistry and growing friendship as they spend more time together. Their relationship is allowed to develop naturally, although the reason for Lucy’s hoarding is shoehorned in. I still shed a tear.

Natalie Krinsky’s script and direction makes for an updated, relevant rom-com. It’s been a fair few months since I’ve seen one I’ve really liked.

The only jarring part was when Nick made his grand gesture because it took away from Lucy’s big moment. Other than that, I was utterly charmed and will be seeing The Broken Hearts Gallery again.

I love that I’ve seen more movies by female directors and writers this year than in the last 20 years.
