Movie Review: ‘The 355’

Review by Lauryn Angel

If you look at the cast list of The 355 and expect the movie to be an impactful, message-filled film, you are going to be disappointed. If you’re looking for a fun action flick that happens to feature three Academy-Award winning actresses kicking ass, then The 355 delivers!

Jessica Chastain leads the cast as CIA agent Mason “Mace” Browne, who, after a botched mission with her partner Nick Fowler (Sebastian Stan), puts together her own team to track down a top-secret weapon. Her recruits are her former MI6 ally Khadijah (Lupita Nyong’o), a tech specialist, rival German agent Marie Schmidt (Diane Kruger), and skilled Colombian psychologist Graciela (Penelope Cruz). The hunt for the weapon takes them from Paris, to Morocco, to Shanghai, where they encounter various enemies tracking the same weapon and learn to trust one another, despite their conflicting loyalties.

It was fun to watch an action flick led by women, and though I had problems with some of the ways these women were written, I enjoyed the movie overall. The plot was fairly predictable, but let’s face it, it usually is for this kind of movie. What I really enjoyed was watching a group of women in their forties (or close to 40, in Nyong’o’s case) seamlessly transition from red-carpet glam to ass-kicking without batting an eye (but losing the heels). Realistic? No. But a hell of a good time.
