Review by Lauryn Angel
When I was a kid, I read a lot of comics. One comic I read was The New Teen Titans. And while the characters are the same, Teen Titans Go! has a very different tone than those comics. These Teen Titans are wacky, ridiculous, and a lot of fun. So I looked forward to Teen Tians Go! To The Movies as a reprieve from the grittier live-action DCU films.
The basic plot of the movie is that the Teen Titans – particularly Robin (Scott Menville) – want their own superhero movie. The franchise pokes fun at the DC movie universe. Wonder Woman (Halsey) notes that it took a while, but she has a movie, and Green Lantern (Lil Yachty) admits that he has a movie, but “We don’t talk about it.” The movie even manages to take a shot at the infamous “Martha” scene in Batman vs. Superman, with Nicholas Cage as Superman and Jimmy Kimmel as Batman. The Teen Titans battle Slade (Wil Arnett) – also known as Deathstroke – whom they confuse with Deadpool at first, and harass superhero movie director Jade Wilson (Kristen Bell) for a shot at the silver screen.
As you might expect, hilarity ensues as Robin, Beast Boy (Greg Cipes), Cyborg (Khary Payton), Raven (Tara Strong), and Starfire (Hynden Walch) endeavor to be taken seriously as real superheroes. But the film works because the Titans are anything but serious. Throw in fart jokes, self-referential humor, and tons of celebrity cameos, and you’ve got a movie that’s fun for both kids and adults.
