Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles are back to face off against the mysterious Shadow and the not-dead Dr. Robotnik (did anyone really think he died at the end of part 2; I’ll be more surprised if he ever stays dead). The plot moves about as fast as Sonic with plenty of room for action, adventure, suspense, a heart-breaking back story, and a dance break (am I kidding and/or exaggerating? Go find out). Fragile alliances are formed, and allegiances are tested and pushed to their limits. And they throw in a red herring or two to try to keep you guessing, though not really.
Most of the other characters from the previous films return for the ride, though some of the human characters have been relocated to cameo status due to the increasing number of video game characters. Wade had a fun spin-off series with Knuckles, so I guess it is fine that he has only one scene in this movie. I am not complaining per se, just saying it is noticeable. Jim Carrey, on the other hand, gets as much, if not more, screen time to show off his hilarious and villainous character(s), which is always welcome in my book.
Overall, I thought it was an excellent movie; entertaining, funny, and a bit dramatic. I loved every minute from the opening logos and action scene introducing Shadow to the mid- and post-credit scenes. Jim Carrey is still awesome, and Keanu Reeves as Shadow is a perfect addition to the franchise; hopefully we get to see more of both. As long as the writing stays at or better than its current level, I would love to see more down the line.
