Jesse Neo, a 23-year-old artist from Sydney, Australia – but now based in Los Angeles, California – reveals to us how his musical experience helped him come up with the idea for a marketplace for producers and artists to collaborate.
In 2017, after self-releasing several electronic dance tracks, his works became a sensation throughout Australia and Europe with several clubs and radio stations playing his tunes. Then after being featured in The Huffington Post and RESPECT Magazine with dazzling reviews, an array of new music opportunities came his way, and he was invited to relocate to Los Angeles.
Reflecting upon his experience, Jesse revealed that not only is he a creative person, but also technical. One flaw that he saw in the entertainment industry was the lack of technological innovation. Everything was still done manually, and usually with pen and paper.
For example, every day, he would be on the phone with countless clients discussing how a song should sound like, the tempo it should be written in, where the final track will be stored, and who the rights of the song would belong to. At times, he even had to explain to the other end how to access a digital hard drive that contained his songs.
With this in mind, the Australian created his music and collaborative platform, Gemtracks, to buy and sell beats without the hassle of paperwork. The website was originally aimed at indie artists and record labels looking for instrumentals for their songs that didn’t want to go through the traditional process of hiring a songwriter or composer full time. By going to Gemtracks, the buyer would be able to purchase unused beats, receive the copyright ownership and not have to pay any additional royalties.
To his surprise, Gemtracks proved to be quite popular. When some of his friends saw the website, they encouraged him to expand the platform to allow collaboration between artists, book recording studios and get help from other producers.
“I was told that a lot of musicians are not making enough money to do music as a fulltime job,” Jesse recalled. “If Gemtracks can change this – which I think it can – it will allow more people to do what they love and earn steady streams of income for doing so.”
To this day, some well-known producers on the platform include Milana Leybovich, IYFFE, Beowülf, and Taylor Carroll – all having worked in major companies such as Sony, Universal and Warner. Based on current analysis, hip hop beats are most popular on the website.
“Now I want to take this opportunity to invite those that are hoping to start a career in music to sign up to Gemtracks,” Jesse continued with a grin. “If unsure, there are several educational sections on the website, including blogs, eBooks and videos that can help pave your way to success.”
Gemtracks sounds like an interesting project that combines technology and music together. If this sounds like something you would want to know more, make sure you head over there to buy beats now.
