Izzy Russo has just been promoted to sales manager at the department store she works at and is excited by this promotion. What she’s not happy about is her boyfriend, Evan, who treats her like crap. He makes fun of her weight, ignores her attempts to talk and is always on her phone. Callahan Knight has been hired as the head of security at the store, and the night before he starts he sees Izzy with Evan at a steak house, and how horrible he treats her. When he meets her the next day at the store he decides he has to have her. He hacks her phone and becomes ‘Caleb’ the AI man she has downloaded as her online boyfriend. He assumes the role and they have many conversations, including some racy ones. He also is checking out Evan, and encourages her to dump him, which she does, but it doesn’t go well. Once she’s single the attraction between her and Cal is finally acted on, with hot sex, but the secret that Cal is keeping and he’s determined to tell her the truth and worries how she will react. This was a fun, well-written dark comedy that hits all the right notes. A good end of the year novel.
