The year is 1925 and there are a lot of children left homeless from the Spanish Flu years ago and for other reasons. They’re put on a train and sent west with the hopes of finding homes for them. For three kids there’s been no luck. Charles, Patrick and Opal are reaching the last stop on the train ride in hopes of finding a family, if not they will be sent back to New York, and none want to go back. They decide to jump off the train and hide out. They make there way to the Stewart farm, where Ma and Pa and their daughter Nara take them in on their ranch. Things are fine for a time until their secret is revealed and the law comes for them. The family won’t give them up without a fight.
A solid debut novel from author Dianna Rostad that looks at the lives of children and how it helps make a family for three kids that never had a fair shot.
