Following last year’s awesome novel Baby Teeth might have been a difficult thing for any author. Yet the second novel from author Zoje Stage is as good as her first novel. In Wonderland a mysterious force is keeping one family hostage in their house and on their lands for a reason we will learn about as the book goes along. Is this force friendly or evil? Author Stage layers her story so that it could lean either way and thus keeps the reader engaged throughout the novel.
For Orla and Shaw Bennett and their two young children Eleanor Queen and Tycho it’s a new beginning at an old house on lots of land in upstate New York, close to the Montreal border. The house needs a lot of repairs (some of which have already taken place). When they arrive Eleanor swears she hears the trees taking to her. Shaw does as well. And then weird things start to happen. Freak snowstorms in only certain places, Shaw gets lost on a walk and he starts to act weird.
After a few days of this Orla and Shaw decide they need to leave. When they try to a massive snow storm has taken place. Their car is buried. A tragic accident takes place and when they finally try to leave the whole house and the lands are covered with ice. Something or someone doesn’t want them to leave. And the only person that may be able to save them is young Eleanor Queen. Just what does this force want and how can Eleanor be the key to everything?
You can pick up Wonderland in stores on Tuesday, July 14th from Mulholland Books.
