Lucy Cooper has returned to Winthrop Island with her daughter for her father’s funeral. He vanished a week ago in the water, and his body has not been found yet. She hadn’t seen him in years, and now has to clean out his house, and deal with all the pirate crap he has. He had always said there was a treasure buried on his land, but he never found it. She reconnects with Ben, her first love, and a disgraced football player, after a tragic accident on the football field. When strange things happen at her house, Ben is there to help her out. We also have two dual timelines going on: in 1717, we learn about pirates on the island, and in 2012, we learn about Lucy and Ben’s love story. We soon learn that her father’s claim of treasure might not be so far-fetched. As the novel hits its climax, shocking discoveries are made, and Lucy finds her life in danger. Another solid character-driven novel from author Williams, who never disappoints her readers.
