Book Review: ‘What Might Have Been: A Novel’ By Holly Miller

Lucy Lambert is fed up with her job and broken promises and suddenly quits after eight years. She heads to the local pub and has a non-alcoholic drink (she hasn’t drank in ten years because of something we learn about during the novel) and her horoscope says today she will meet her soulmate. Then Caleb is next to her ordering a drink and he’s hot and Lucy thinks maybe it’s him until she sees her ex-college sweetheart Max outside and runs out to him. Caleb has slipped a note in Lucy’s coat and days later she finds it. After that night the story splits into two different novels. One is if she left the small seaside town she lives in to move to London and maybe re-connect with Max or stay where she is and get with Caleb. One story is stay and the other is go and we follow along on both paths to see what her life, both personal and professional would be like and it’s quite a ride the reader goes on. Two well-written different stories and what her life would be like. A double love-story, that will keep you reading and on the edge of your seat and picking sides as to whole Lucy should end up with. You won’t want to put it down.

You can pick up What Might Have Been in stores on Tuesday, January 18th from Putnam.
