The year is 1968 and six teens are in Good Shepard, an institution, run by the nuns of Sisters of Charity. These women are vicious and treat the girls horribly. Mairin is 15 (almost 16) and is sent there after her stepfather tries to attack her, and her mother sends her there. What she finds there is beyond horrible and she, along with some other girls, make a daring escape plan, stealing hidden money, and a bookmobile. We follow them on their journey, not only in the institute, but on their escape and what happens to them after. This is an incredible historical fiction novel, based on a real-life place and situations that took place over the years. It’s intense, shocking and all too real what happened to these young women. Author Susan Wiggs did her research and this is only a book she can write, she excels at these kind of novels.
