The follow-up novel to last year’s City Under One Roof is a letdown. The first novel was set in Point Mettier, Alaska, in the winter, where there’s barely any sun, and in a building that houses the whole town. This novel comes back there, but doesn’t spend much time there. After the events of the last book. Detective Cara Kennedy has more questions than answers about the death of her husband and son, when pictures are found on the phone of a dead gang member, she needs answers. She has the bodies exhumed and tested, and is shocked by what she learns, and that there are more dead people showing up as well. As she starts her investigation, there are forces wanting her to stop looking, she finds out the shocking truths, and it leads to a climactic showdown. The story is a good follow-up to the first book, but misses the intimacy of the building, the quirky characters and overall feel of the first novel. It does tie up loose ends from the first novel.
