The setting for this novel is Luanda, Angola, and it features the first novel with Kyle Ryan, the youngest son of Jack Ryan. He’s part of a three-man Defense Intelligence Agency team installing communications and trying to combat the growing Chinese influence in the country. The unit is attacked, and his two co-workers are killed and he barely escapes to the US Embassy, and Jack Ryan is notified about what has happened to his son. There’s growing unrest in the country led by rebel Baptista, who has for years dreamed of overtaking the government and becoming the President. He puts his plan in motion, has the US embassy attacked, and Kyle and others are taken prisoners, not knowing that Kyle is Jack’s son. Jack Ryan and his team put a plan into motion to find his son, and to take down Baptista and put the reigning President back in power. Katie Ryan, the President’s daughter, plays a pivotal role in the rescue and is on the ground in Angola, helping to track the goings on. The debut of Kyle and the use of Katie (her second novel as a pivotal character) add to the family dynamic in these books, and it’s fun to see them get their dues. Fans of the series will enjoy this action-packed novel.
