The year is 1962 and Jemma Barker, who is 27 and black, lives in Chicago and is having a rough time. Her father has died, her boyfriend has gotten another woman pregnant, she tried to commit suicide and has been fired from her teaching job. Out of the blue, she gets a letter from the Duchon Family, in New Orleans, to move there and be a tutor, with free room and board, and 300 dollars a week pay. When she arrives there, she’s warned to turn around and leave be locals, but doesn’t listen to them. When she gets there, she finds the family weird, there is no tutor job, she’s to be an assistant and then she learns a shocking truth, the family is under a curse, and she may be the only one to break it. Every 7 years a member of the family is killed and next year another one will be taken, and the family cannot leave the land the house is on. Jemma can see ghosts and has a gift she has denied, and now to save her life (she learns a shocking secret about herself) and the Duchon family, she must figure out how to break this curse. This is a haunting, gothic thriller that hooks you from the beginning and never lets up. Fans of this kind of novel will enjoy this one.
