Maddox Sinclair has lost her job, her apartment, and she cannot afford her diabetes medicine. She decides to try and strike a deal with the Dryad Queen, she will do anything if the Queen can cure her diabetes, give her money, and see that she is never homeless. While there, she learns a shocking secret about her father. The Queen’s deal is that she has to kill the Redwood King by a certain date. Prince Castor is cursed; anyone who loves him will die. He makes a deal with his brother, the king, that he will find someone who will fall in love with him by a certain date, and his curse will be lifted. When Maddox gets to the castle, she finds Castor in the King’s chair and assumes he is the King, and tries to kill him. It doesn’t work, and she’s given a job at court, and Castor has chosen her to be the one to end his curse. Eventually, she learns the truth, both their lives are in danger, and another shocking secret is revealed, and Maddox may be the key to saving their lives. A fun, magical mystery featuring mythical creatures and humans. Reading the interaction between Maddox and Castor is refreshing. This is a perfect late-summer novel. I hope there will be more novels with these characters.
