Kate Warne is the first female detective hired by the famed Pinkerton agency, and in 1861 as the Civil War started, President Lincoln hired them to find a spy ring that could end the war before it gets started. She’s part of the group that captures a Confederate spy, high society’s Rose Greenhow, who tries to swallow a message and has a cipher key, that could bust the ring. They need to get this information right away before the Confederate learns she’s been compromised, and it’s up to Kate to try and get it. The two women are strong-willed, and don’t agree on much, and Kate has secrets as well, with quite the backstory, and it becomes a test of wills between them, and will Kate be able to get the information before it’s too late. This is a great historical fiction novel, with strong writing, and a story that keeps you engaged. This is a good follow-up to Sin Eater, her debut novel, which I highly recommend as well.
