Renee Ballad is in charge of the open-unsolve(d cold case) division of the LAPD and on this day things don’t go well. She’s out surfing before work, when her car gets broken into, and her purse, gun and badge are stolen. Afraid to report them stolen, she decides to investigate and find them. At her job, she has a team of volunteers who help look into cold cases, take a fresh look at potential new evidence, and even manage to solve/close some cases. Currently, they’re working on two big cases, the Pillowcase Rapist, who last struck in 2005 and the Black Dahlia Killer. A new familiar person joins the crew, and one is lost to a vicious murder, and Renee is determined to solve her murder and close out the other two cases, and enlists help from Harry Bosch and is able to track down her gun and badge, and close down a group of thieves. This is the sixth novel in the series and another good one from author Michael Connelly. With a supporting cast of fun, quirky characters, this one is not to be missed. Fans of the series will be mostly happy with this one (except for the sad death).
