I really liked John’s previous novel, The Passengers, and now he has topped himself. His new one is just outstanding. It’s a well-written, character driven novel, that just starts off strong and never lets up. This is one you will not want to put down, and totally memorizes you into the lives of these characters. The setting is a hostel in Venice Beach, California, run by the owner Ron, and Tommy, who works the front desk and is trying to escape a painful couple of years, and does a variety of other things. We meet the characters of Savannah, on the run from her powerful father, Eric and Nicole, who are on a mission, Matty and Declan, two best friends out to see America, Jake a former boy band star, and Ruth, who is in love with an A-List actor. They all converge at the hostel, and they each have secrets, and reasons for being here. We follow along with their stays, and learn about their lives, why they’re here, and what their goals are. Every chapter gives us insight to the characters, and with a lot of twists and turns, this book is one of the best books of the year. Beware, you will need Kleenex by the time you finish.
