In a mythical time, Magnus Tresti left the army after an injury after many years serving. He has very little money to his name, and is rebuffed wherever he goes. He ends up helping out a widow and a witch, Jannae, doing chores around her house, for a room, and pay when he is done. One night, they both witness a man falling out of the sky. It’s a dead demon, and Magnus takes a tinder box that is in his pocket and takes off from the witch, who is not paying him. He soon learns the box is magic, and he is able to summon three demons that will do his bidding. He comes to think of them as friends and wants to try to set them loose. He is being followed by Jannae and a warlock, who both want the box. It leads to Magnus being captured, Jannae with the box, and a showdown where not everyone will survive. This is a fun, magical novel, with interesting characters, especially the three demons, and Magnus, a man you root for. A perfect summer beach read.
