The year is 1979, in Long Island, and Grace, who is married to Tom, and has two girls, is on her way to the store, when she sees a little boy asleep on the street. She takes him home, and calls the police, and it turns out he is from Vietnam, living in a shelter with his aunt. Jack fought in the war, got injured, and now lives above the clock shop Tom owns, and works with him. The book follows these characters from now and from the time before the war, during the war and aftermath, how they all met, how the child came to live in the United States, and how they became friends and family. This is an intense, well-written character-driven novel that you don’t want to put down. One of the best books of the year.
