In 2006 Katrine, discovers secrets about her 86-year-old mother Allina, and learns the shocking secrets of her past, her father, and just what her parents did in WWII. Allina grew up in Germany with her aunt and uncle, and for the most part, had a good life. Then in 1939 Allina learns that she’s part Jewish, but must keep it a secret, and her village is soon taken by the Germans, Allina is raped and is put to work at a German Hospital for children, Horchland House, where children are born and adopted out, to keep the German lines going. While there, she falls for SS officer, Karl Von Strassberg, and they fall in love, she gets pregnant and they marry. But both have secrets, both are part Jew, and he works for the resistance, in secret, and both their lives are in danger, and he works to get his family to safety. This is an intense historical fiction novel, that starts off strong and never lets up. This is the debut novel from author Allegri, and it’s a winner. Fans of these kind of novels will enjoy this one.
