Chase Burke comes from old money and doesn’t have to work, but loves his job as a sommelier. On this night, he is toasting his late brother, Michael, who was an FBI agent and on an assigenment that went wrong badly, and was killed, and later made out to be a traitor. He gets a call from his boss asking him to come to work a certain congresswoman is coming in tonight, and they seem to have eyes for each other. Things take a deadly turn when shooters arrive and are gunning for her. Chase, who is a former soldier, manages to kill some of them, but the Congresswoman is injured and taken to the hospital. The police take him in, and Detective Alice Doyle seems to buy his story, but her partner does not. Then Chase finds intruders in his apartment, the same men from the shooting, and takes two of them out. Then he goes on the run, determined to find out what is going on. He reaches out to Doyle, who is willing to help him. He soon finds out one of the people in charge of everything is someone that he knows well. Meanwhile Doyla is in for shock as well. It leads to a climactic shootout, with help coming from the most unlikely of people. This is an action-packed thriller that starts off fast and never lets up. In a year of great action novels, this one is right up there with the best of them. I cannot wait for the next book next November.
