Retired FBI agent Owen Pollard is found shot to death in his home. It was first ruled a suicide, he called 911 and said he was shot, then his wife found him dead in their kitchen. Jack Swyteck, a lawyer, is called by another lawyer, Patricia Dubrow, and told him that she has referred Elliott Stafford to Jack to be his lawyer; he’s been subpoenaed by a grand jury looking into the death. Jack advises him to use his Fifth Amendment rights and remain silent. It turns out Elliot has a big secret that involves the Pollard family, and he is soon brought up on second-degree murder charges, and now has used the right to remain silent, he will not speak to anyone, including Jack. Jack believes Elliott is innocent and fights like hell to prove it, and we soon get a shocking reveal as to what really happened the night Owen died. This is the 20th novel in the series, and it’s another great one. Author Grippando is right up there with the best legal thriller writers in the business. I love this series and look forward to it every year.
