The year is 1960, and Theresa Johnson is a reporter in Pasadena and for the last two years has been assigned to doing obits. When she gets a call from Adele Pearce about an obit she wrote that had wrong information, the women meet. Adele asks her to write her biography and will pay her good money. Her story begins in 1903 when she moved from London, at 22, to live with her parents in Pasadena, who are now living here due to her father having a medical condition. She soon learns the family is broke, and she must marry to save her family. She meets Mr. Whitley, and they soon are married. The marriage starts off good but soon goes downhill. We follow along with her story as she tells it to Theresa, and it’s quite the story. This is another great character-driven novel from author Julia Kelly, who never disappoints with her novels.
