The year is 1938 and Laura Powell is traveling to Paris, to buy a wedding dress and to secretly launch a singing career, away from the controlling eye of her powerful, rich family. Henry Salter, works for her father, and is given the job to chaperone her on the trip, finding business for the family company, and keep his hands on of Laura. On the boat, they run into a young boy, named David, who is a Je, and who is a stowaway. He lost her parents and is alone in the world, and David and Laura take him in when in Paris. By that time the two have fallen in love. Laura has gotten a job singing, Henry has been asked to write articles, and spy on the enemy, in exchange for getting David a fake passport. For a while they’re happy and plan to be a family, despite Laura’s father’s threats. When David is outed for being a Jew, he’s taken and is going to be sent away, until a daring plan is hatched to rescue him, and for the three of them to try and get out of France alive. This is a great character-driven novel, where you root for the three of them to be a family, and to escape unharmed together. Fans of these WWII Paris novels will enjoy this one a lot.
