Book Review: ‘The Outside Man: A Matt Drake Novel’ By Don Bentley Is A Thrilling Second Novel

Author Don Bentley burst on to the action/thriller genre last year with his first Matt Drake novel Without Sanction. A thrilling top-notch debut. Now he’s back with his follow-up novel and it’s as thrilling as the first one. There’s a reason Lee Child has a blurb on the front cover and Don has been chosen to write in the Tom Clancy Jack Ryan universe. He’s that good.

It’s been a year since the event of the last book and Matt Drake is in Austin living his life with his wife. He’s not with the Government agency DIA (Defense Intelligence Agency). Driving home he spots someone tailing him. He has no idea what this is about but knows there’s about to be an issue. He gets into defensive position and soon a shoot-out is taking place. Someone is trying to take him out. He survives and meets up with his old boss. It seems to have something to do with the events in the first novel. Soon he’s dragged back into the agency to figure this out and his wife is happy about this as she doesn’t see the man she married since he’s been on leave. It soon leads to Matt going to Iraq, a bad guy named the Devil, who keeps getting the jump on him and a sex trafficking ring. He’s soon given an ultimatium by the Devil, one that he can’t refuse. But Matt being Matt he comes up with a plan of his own. Soon his world is turned upside down when someone close to him is taken by the Devil and Matt won’t rest until he saves this person and takes the Devil down once and for all. It leads to a fantastic action sequence, that keeps the reader on the edge of your seat.

You can pick up The Outside Man in stores on Tuesday, March 2nd from Berkley.
